Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa on the Visit by Mayor of Tshwane to Taipei
2016/12/31

Q:Recently, some media reported that Mr. Solly Msimanga, Mayor of Tshwane, visited Taipei. What’s your comment on that?

A:We have noted that Mayor Msimanga, in disregard of the objection from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, visited Taipei. We value the commitment reiterated by the South African government to the one-China policy.

There is only one China and that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. It has become the broad consensus and common aspiration of the international community to adhere to the one-China policy.

China firmly opposes the Mayor of Tshwane to be in official contact with Taiwan, which apparently goes against the one-China principle and the basic norms governing international relations.
