The Chinese mainland's Taiwan affairs chief said in Hangzhou Wednesday that pioneering work, based on objective history review and forward-looking thinking, was hoped to explore new way to build better relations across the Taiwan Strait.

At the opening ceremony of the symposium hosted by the Cross-Strait Relations Research Center (CSRRC), Wang Yi, director of both the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said the new positive situation in the cross-Strait relations needs new idea and new thoughts on how to enhance the relations by peaceful means.

Wang said the proposition raised by the CPC of building mutual trust, laying aside disputes, seeking consensus and shelving differences, and creating a win-win situation across the strait would be a practical guidance to a brighter peaceful future.

Wang also called for political wisdom and forward-leaning attitudes from across the strait to address existing disputes and keep the good momentum.

Wang said history should be sober-mindedly reviewed. "Historical traces would bring about insights for developing modern relations," Wang said.

"It's particularly meaningful to understand the significance of fighting 'the Taiwan independence' as well as follow the 1992 consensus," he said.

The CSRRC, established in September 2000, groups retired key policy makers, renowned researchers on politics, economics, law, military, history, foreign relations and world strategy.

The two-day symposium attracted 171 attendees, including 96 from Taiwan.
