All preparations ready for the Paralympics

    BEIJING, Aug. 26-- The Beijing Olympic Games has wrapped up and the Chinese capital is ready for its next challenge - the Beijing Paralympics.

    BOCOG officials say all preparations, including those for the venues, barrier-free facilities, the torch relay and the opening ceremony, are complete. More than 4,200 athletes from 148 countries and regions will take part in the games.

    BOCOG Executive Vice President Tang Xiaoquan said Beijing has made five world class sports venues, including the National Stadium, in terms of barrier-free facilities. Operational procedures for the Games'events have been finalized, and special services for disabled athletes are in place.

All the stations of the city's eight subway lines have at least one entry and exit which can be used by passengers in wheelchairs. 

    Tang Xiaoquan, BOCOG Executive Vice President, says "There are 20 stadiums and six independent training facilities reserved for the Beijing Paralympics. All of them have been selected from the Olympic Games venues. Test runs have been conducted in all these venues."

    Beijing has opened 16 special bus lines and prepared 400 special vehicles for the games. All the stations of the city's eight subway lines have at least one entry and exit which can be used by passengers in wheelchairs.

    The city has set up its first barrier-free taxi team. And tourist attractions such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City have installed barrier-free facilities.

    BOCOG has also designated 22 hospitals and 16 hotels for the attendants of the Paralympics. 30-thousand volunteers will be on hand during the games.
