The 5th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students Successfully Concluded

In the afternoon of 17 May, the 5th Chinese Bridge--Chinese Proficiency Competition was held at Stellenbosch University of South Africa. Seven contestants from Stellenbosch University, University of South Africa ect. took part in the competition. About 100 people attended the competition including Mr. Weiqiang Shi Chinese Consul-General, Ms. Guizhi Tang Deputy Consul-General, Mr. Yanggen Wei First Secretary of the Educational Section of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa and Prof. Walter T Claassen Vice Rector of Stellenbosch University.

During the competition, contestants delivered speeches and performed singing, wushu etc.. In the end, two contestants respectively from Stellenbosch University and University of South Africa won the first two awards and also the chance to visit Beijing, China for the competition's final round.

In his congratulatory remarks, Mr. Weiqiang Shi thanked the contestants, Chinese teachers and Stellenbosch University etc. for their unremitting effort to spread splendid Chinese culture, and wished the Chinese education in South Africa more accomplishments under the joint effort of the governments of both countries. Now in South Africa there are 25 Chinese language institutes with a total of nearly 2000 students.

The 5th Chinese--Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition is co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, the Center for Chinese Studies of Stellenbosch University (Confucius Institute).
