The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in South Africa welcomes friends from all walks of life to be presented at "Photo Exhibition: Wenchuan Earthquake in China", July 22~28, 2008, Inside Entrance 3, Opposite Woolworths, Menlyn Park, C/o Atterbury Road & Lois Avenue, Menlo Park, Pretoria.

By running 'Photo Exhibition: Wenchuan Earthquake in China', we intend to express our heartfelt gratitude to South African Government and people and the international community, and hope the world will remember those days forever.

Background on Wenchuan Earthquake in China

On May 12, 2008, a devastating earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan in China. By 12:00 on July 12, a total of 69,196 people were killed during the quake, and 374,176 wounded. In addition, 18,379 people were missing. Millions of people became homeless.

Immediately after the earthquake, the Chinese Government and the Chinese people went all out to carry out the rescue operation and disaster relief for victims in the worst earthquake since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

China is not alone. South African Government and South African people and the international community provided generous aid for the earthquake victims, and supported China in its rescue operation and disaster relief work.

The Chinese people will never forget these friends in need. The devastating earthquake has destroyed the Wenchuan area, but the world has all reasons to see a new Wenchuan area rise from debris in the near future!
